DAYTON GLASSBLOWER DONATES VESSEL TO DRISCOLL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL TO FURTHER ART EDUCATION AND HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS
James Michael Kahle Creates Glass Bowl as Students Observe; Art Piece Intended for Raffle Program to Raise Funds for Art Education
CENTERVILLE, Ohio (April 12, 2013) Fourth and fifth grade students of Driscoll Elementary Schools Art Connect program, affiliated with the Dayton Art Institute, recently attended a two-hour glassmaking workshop at James Michael Kahle glass studio to further their studies in the storied history of Ohios glass-making industry.
The early March Saturday learning workshop provided the students with a real-time demonstration of glass blowing by one of Americas best-known artisans in the glass industry, James Michael Kahle.
While teaching the students about his craft, James Michael designed and created a glass bowl showing steps in the process of gathering liquid glass, applying color, and molding and shaping the vessel by blowing, swinging and re-heating the piece.
James Michael donated the fluted-glass bowl to Driscoll Elementary for future student art education and experiences such as workshops at Glass By James Michael.
Our students were presented with an amazing opportunity to see one of the great glassblowers in action right here in Dayton, said Kathy Spyrou, gifted intervention specialist with Driscoll Elementary School. The fact that he donated this beautiful vessel to our schools art program is so generous and appreciated. We encourage everyone to purchase a raffle ticket and support future art education.
