That word “messaging?” It’s been around a really long time, born in traditional marketing and public relations. And, you know what? It remains as important today as before, perhaps even more so.
Technology has disrupted how business markets to customers and how sales teams build relationships, too. It’s ever more critical to ensure your messaging is tight to inform your business story to everyone outside your company.
I am a message mapping master.
For 20 years, I have been standing in front of businesses of all sizes to help them fine tune messages to position the company with authority.
Not much has changed with the process I use to facilitate a message mapping session. What has changed is the clutter. Companies, solopreneurs, small firms, business units, sales teams, and corporations are struggling to deliver a clear and simple message.
Why?
Look around! You already know why…we live and work in a social media marketing world where the shift from customer to company is pretty much complete. Customers are in the driver’s seat, and if your company is still struggling how to communicate with them, you lose.
Message Mapping
When you consider the words “message mapping” perhaps you envision a road map with words all over it. That’s probably a good visual to explain what I do; however, I deliver so much more.
The best messaging is done with listening. I get to listen to you and your leadership talk about your business, and I capture what’s said in real time. I format the raw notes, make the first edit and then simplify more.
What you get are three versions of messages categorized by theme with supporting bullets. Teams love having these versions because it helps with copywriting, social media, and blogging, too.
Once the final version of the messaging documents are approved, then I map it into one PowerPoint slide. All the messages are in one place; pretty convenient, right?
Your business can benefit from a message mapping session with me. It’s so important for every company to revisit its positioning with a business story that is accomplished with message mapping.
